The study "A journey into the dark depths of one's own mind, or I am their God by Josef Pánek" brings an analysis of Josef Pánek's latest prose entitled I am their God and it also engages in the evaluation of the critical reception of this book. It interprets the basic semantic lines of the work and shows Pánek's typical narrative strategies. However, it is devoted above all to the fictional consciousness of the main character, which represents the central space and the focus of the meaning of the entire text. In the final part, the study attempts to critically assess Pánek's novel and to explain why this prose did not fulfill the expectations that...

The paper explores the topic of intercultural prose as a highly productive and differentiated stream of contemporary Czech literature. Their authors draw inspiration mainly from their own biographies, emphasizing various sub-themes in different genre modifications. The common base of these works is some kind of confrontation of different cultures, mostly represented by the subjective perspective of a particular character, staying often "on the verge", taking the role of an observer or outsider. A frequent motif is the phenomenon of culture shock in its various stages and forms, as a natural reaction to encountering another/different/foreign culture....

The paper presents the results of the research which explores the diachronic development of possessive adjectives in Old and Middle Czech. The research deals primarily with possessive adjectives formed from feminine nouns (constituent type matčin) and is mainly focused on the morphological aspects. On the basis of the excerpted material, the author observes the cases in which possessive adjectives of the type matčin have been preserved and also pays attention to the competition of the nominal and composite (adjectival) forms in each case. The possessive adjectives are shortly commented at the syntactic level as well.

The article describes in theoretical terms the aims, forms and Principles of the CLIL (abbreviation of Content and Language Integrated Learning) teaching method, which consists in integrated teaching of a foreign language together with the content of a non-language subject in language education. In addition to the theoretical study of the language, students of Czech studies in Vienna can also develop their practical knowledge of Czech by communicating with native speak- ers from the Czech minority. Students with different language backgrounds meet in the same class during their studies. We asked ourselves whether previous knowledge of the Slavic language is an advantage or disadvantage. We pointed out the typical manifestations of interference from German to Czech and showed what errors it causes and on which language levels.

The integration of language skills as an integral part of the everyday communication is reflected in modern methods of teaching second language. However, many high-stakes language exams still assess language skills separately. To reflect modern trends, an integrated listening-to-writing task was included in the end-of-course exams of Czech at the Institute of Language and Preparatory Studies, Charles University in Prague. Passing this exam and getting a certificate of language proficiency allow students to apply for Czech public universities and study in Czech. In this paper the content, construct and decision to include integrated task in the exam...

The present study focuses on the acoustic analysis of spoken Czech of Francophone speak- ers and focuses on the realization of vowels (which were measured and evaluated using the Praat program). The background material for the analysis were audio-recordings of loud Czech reading by 50 students studying Czech with French as a mother tongue. The analysis shows that the realization of Czech vowels is influenced by negative transfer from the native language, which decreases with higher language level.

The paper presents the results of the analysis of verb valency in non-native Czech on the basis of the learner corpus MERLIN. In order to confirm the hypothesis based on previous studies on valency in non-native Czech, i.e. that non-native speakers overuse prototypical patterns and central meanings of verbs, the use of verbs and their valency frames were examined in 148 texts at CEFR levels A2, B1, and B2. The research based on 3350 occurrences of verbs leads to the conclusion that the number of valency patterns and expressed meanings indeed does not significantly increase with higher level of proficiency.

The paper focuses on the possibilities of using selected methods and procedures of the Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking programme in teaching individuals with a different mother tongue. Most of them develop reading literacy understood as the ability to understand, reflect on and use written text to achieve certain goals, i.e. to develop one's own skills and knowledge and to actively participate in society. The essence of the paper consists of examples of practical use of selected methods of critical thinking in tea- ching Czech as a second/foreign language, which serve to motivate and develop writing and speaking.

Kundera's last novel has two levels of action - French and Soviet. In the end they permeate each other. This permeation is part of the general principle of paradox. Beside the latter, Kundera in his novel applies the heptadic principle (based on number seven). The action in the novel is presented by a fictional narrator, who can be identified with the author. From the characters in the novel, also remarkable is ingot, an unknown character. The finale of the prose also contains the paradoxical principle and its framing is local. Key words: two action levels, paradoxical principle, heptadic principle, fictional narrator, ingot, paradoxical finale, local...

Among the epigrams of Karel Havlíček Borovský is the Učený epigram z ruštiny (Learned Epigram from Russian), a translation of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin's Epigram od Dondukov-Korsakov (Эпиграмма на Дондукова-Корсакова), which in 1835 mocked Mikhail Alexandrovich Prince Korsakov, who was appointed that same year second vice-president of the Imperial Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg and chairman of its administrative committee. The main topic of the study is a critical consideration of the analytical and interpretative methods used by the literary historian and critic Jiří Zizler in his monograph on the poet Zdeněk Rotrekl - The Aristocrat of the Catacombs. Towards the Life and Work of Zdeněk Rotrekl (2021). The study demonstrates that Zizler's book is the result of the combination of several approaches: the literary-critical, historical, and comparative, as well as the structural, phenomenological, and hermeneutical. One must also add the method of close reading, which Zizler uses to create his interpretive models.

The study analyses the reception of Petra Hůlová's literary work in Poland with a focus on her publishers' activities. The writer's books have been published in two different publishing houses - W.A.B., one of the biggest fiction publishers in Poland, and Afera, small publishing house founded by bohemist and translator Julia Różewicz. The author of the paper - basing on the publishers' strategies and the reviews of critics and readers - describes the influence of this transition on the perception of Petra Hůlová's works in Poland and on the position of both writer and publisher in Polish literary field.

This paper is addressed Franco Moretti's provocative application of the Darwinian evolutionary model based on the divergence of biological species and their survival through natural selection to literary history. This approach was juxtaposed against the ideas of two leading Russian Formalists, Iurii Tynianov and Roman Jakobson, whose explanation of linguistic/literary change was programmatically anti-Darwinian, making conversion (conceived, though, in a particular way) the cornerstone of their respective historiographies. In doing so, they were reacting to the project of historical poetics advanced by the 19th-century Russian Positivist philologist...
