The article deals with the language of folk songs. It analyses three ones from the oldest song collections from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries (Antonín Francl, Václav Hanka sr., Jan Jeník, knight of Bratřice) untouched by romanticising interferences of editors. Analysis of spelling and content of Czech inscriptions found on the headstones in Volhynia is a part of complex research in the language of Czech speakers settled in this region. The researchers gathered a corpus of 71 inscriptions of various size and contrasted them with a collection published by Česlav Chytrý; his vast database, however, could not be included in the analysis due to unreliable transcriptions and illegible writing on the pictures.The inscriptions show two scripts in use - Cyrillic and Latin. The paper discusses the use of parallel corpora (InterCorp, a subcorpus of Czech National Corpus) in translation. It focuses on advantages and drawbacks of exploiting corpus data for a specific translation task, i.e., presenting a language-specific grammatical category of the Czech aspect to L2 Czech learners via English as the auxiliary language.

This article examines the significant role of nonverbal communication in typically developing children and children with Down syndrome as well. The speech development in this part of population is delayed and because of that it is powerful to use the methods of augmentative or alternative communication with them, e.g. the sign systems. Thanks to this the children are able to achieve the communication success earlier, moreover motor skills and cognitive functions are positively developed. One part of this article is a case study of a nonverbal communication of a boy with Down syndrome and his specific means of communication are introduced.

The article deals with the development of the Czech typographic usage and its reflection in professional manuals and industry standards. In particular, it focuses on the formulation of typographic rules with regard to their obligation to the user, monitors the ratio of descriptiveness or prescriptiveness and the impact of Anglophone typography on Czech typography. It also focuses clashes of linguistically (semantically) and visually based arguments, which affect the resulting typographic practice. Attention is focused mainly on typographic phenomena directly related to the orthographic standard and commonly included in it.

The article discusses the pragmatic level of the translation of the book Le racisme expliqué à ma fille (1999) by the French author Tahar Ben Jelloun. Evaluative expressives undermine the objectivity of news reporting. To identify them, a complex taxonomy has been created. Subsequent analysis of television news has shown a high frequency of use of evaluation expressions in the statement, moreover contextually connected with other evaluation units.
