The contribution describes in detail the operation Dean, carried out by the Czechoslovak Communist State Security in the early 1970s, following incentives submitted by the KGB and focusing on the Slavist Dean Stoddard Worth (1927-2016). The KGB was tracking Worth since his early visits in the post-Stalin Soviet Union in 1957 and managed to copy addresses of Czechoslovak citizens from his notebook which the Soviets sent to the Czechoslovak authorities. Worth visited Czechoslovakia several times and during his 1972 visit, he was closely followed by the Czechoslovak Communist State Security. Even though the counter-intelligence agents even entered Worth's...

Ondřej Bláha

Bohemica Olomucensia 2019, 11(2):38-65 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2019.015

The article examines reflecting on men's long haircuts in Czech media of 1960s and 1970s. The analysis of newspaper texts and selected TV programmes gives a clear impression of nonverbal and verbal strategies of manipulation and involvement of expressivity (which might be either self-evident, or disguised), and draws some general conclusions on the principles of public communication in totalitarian regime (which always could profit from social conformity and limited public awareness). The media texts, presenting the official standpoint of the Party and government, indicate that authorities were not willing to admit that some sociocultural matters were...

Bohemica Olomucensia 2019, 11(2):88-101 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2019.017

This article is a part of the follow-up research on the author's previous comparative research of the zooapellatives or the animal names in Dutch and Czech similes (Křížová 2017). Its aim is to point out the dynamics in this area of the phraseology and to describe some congruences and/or differences in the linguistic picture of the world, which is reflected in the Czech and Dutch adjective-based similes with the animal names. These are most often to be found in the contemporary written language. For this purpose, data from the Czech written corpora SYN2000 and SYN2015 and the Dutch corpus Corpus Hedendaags Nederlands are used.

The practical analysis is based on the theoretical background that defines phonetics of Icelandic and the graphemes which Icelandic share with the Czech writing system. The aim of the research is to list potential problems of pronunciation that the Icelandic learners of Czech may face, and to collect the data for the pronunciation exercises aiming specifically at the speakers of the particular language.

Grammatical rule acquired versus learned in czech language acquisition by non-native speakers

Milan Hrdlička

Bohemica Olomucensia 2019, 11(2):122-136 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2019.019

When acquiring knowledge of a language code (its grammatical system), either the mother tongue or foreign (or second), a major role is played by an intuitive, non-materialized, subjective grammatical rule acquired, as well as a cognitive, technical, explicitly formulated rule learned. A non-native speaker needs complex instructions about the target language, both about the formal aspect and the speech, functional and semantic dimension. Unfortunately, the latter is, more often than not, underestimated in textbooks of Czech for foreigners, there is significant room for improvement. A native speaker needs especially an instruction concerning the form...
