The paper discusses the results of a functional contrastive analysis focusing on the most common greetings in Czech and their English equivalents in the parallel corpus InterCorp. It contrasts forms and functions of polite expressions, examines potential cross-linguistic pragmatic shifts, and ponders on usability of corpus data in the research in politeness.

The conjugation pattern "kupuje" is a highly productive verb type in Czech: there are more than eight thousand records of verb neologisms belonging morphologically to the type "kupuje" in the database Neomat listed during the years 1990-2019. The peak of productivity of the "kupuje" type fell in the second half of the 1990s (the second, smaller peak of productivity came in 2011-2015). On the other hand, the frequency of verbs of the type "kupuje" in journalistic texts written in the last thirty years appears, as the corpus shows, to be steady and without significant fluctuations, both at the level of lemmas and at the level of tokens related to these...

Podstatou výzkumných otázek není testování znalostí morfologie či syntaxe, ale právě míra vnímání struktury věty, a tím i samotných slovních druhů.

In aphasic persons speaking Czech, I verify the following assumption established by Jakob et al. (2011): the more speech-limited an aphasic person is, the more gestures he/she produces during the interpretation of a story. It was found that the number of words produced by aphasic persons varies, partially dependent on the specific type of aphasia. This is particularly true on both ends of the scale - people with large speech distortion use the highest quantity of gestures, people with low speech distortion use gestures to a lesser extent. Within the classification of semantic gestures, I focus particularly on iconic and deictic gestures. In addition,...

The paper maps the view of Vladimír Skalička, one of the main figures of the second generation of the Prague School, on the four related questions of language convergence and contact (linguistic areas, mixing of languages and dialects, causes of linguistic change, and borrowing). Skalička's ideas on language contact are presented in the context of his work, especially his typological theory and his approach to the question of language development. Also discussed and evaluated is the place that Skalička's thinking on language contact has in a wider context, namely in the Prague School. It is shown that these are not antiquated opinions but a living...

The study focuses on the linguistic work of Lubomír Doležel, a Czech - Canadian philologists and theoretician. This part of the author's oeuvre can be demarcated historically by the 1950s and 1960s and also methodologically by Marxist linguistics, structuralist linguistics and literary theory, and mathematical linguistics. The study declares and analyses the development of the author's approach to linguistic inquiry - starting from his general linguistic thought and moving towards the application of structuralist and mathematical methods for the purpose of the analysis of style, which ultimately led the author to the articulation of essential methodological...

František Kopečný wrote a study entitled "Podníceno Durychem. Příspěvek ke slovosledu a slohu české prózy" (Stimulated by Durych. A contribution to the research of word order and the style of Czech prose) for the samizdat anthology Jaroslavu Durychovi k sedmdesátým narozeninám 1956 (To Jaroslav Durych at the occasion of his seventieth birthday, 1956), arranged by Vladimír Justl, an editor and the student of Kopečný. The text has not been published anywhere else. In the study, Kopečný summarizes current findings concerning mutual relation between word order and semantic structure of utterances and he exemplifies them with the use of the quotes from...
