Tourists and discontented places in the Old Town of Prague

Andrew Lass

Bohemica Olomucensia 2014, 6(3):181-190 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2014.019

The Latin wording genius loci is invoked more often than its Czech translation duch místa, the spirit of the place, although both words duch (spirit) and místo (place) are used on their own liberally and with the same range of meanings as their English cognates. It is as if the very sound of Latin evoked an aspect of that which the expression refers to, something that is both real and elusive. The problem I and all my friends and acquaintances face is that the genius loci have gone missing. When approached about this issue, some were agitated others nonplused. All maintained that things had changed, that the Old City has lost its charm and, with the...

Pojem "domov" v českých překladech Rilkovy básnické sbírky Larenopfer (Oběť lárům)

Enrique Gutiérrez Rubio

Bohemica Olomucensia 2014, 6(3):208-217 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2014.021

In this article is presented an analysis of the Czech word "domov" and its counterparts in German (Heim, Heimat), English (home), and Spanish (hogar). It is inferred that there are two main semantics regarding the concept "domov" in these four languages - a first one related to a more material and physical conception (domov-místnost) and a second one with more emotional and even philosophical connotations (domov-místo).In a second part, these two kinds of conceptions of "domov" will be examined in the work of the Prague German-language poet Rilke, and more specifically in Larenopfer.

Major themes of his late poetry are the human condition in the modern world, the meaning of world's history, or the poet's struggle to render reality. These are discussed with respect to philosophical and religious notions or images found in the poems.

Budování identity prezidentských kandidátů na facebookových profilech

Jindřiška Svobodová

Bohemica Olomucensia 2014, 6(3):236-251 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2014.023

The author's main focus in the presented paper was to explore communication strategies used by the presidential candidates in their pre-election campaigns run at their Facebook profiles. The efforts aimed to create a positive self-image of each politician and dishonour their political rivals have become a natural part of the political competition in the pre-election time. Thus the author's attention was driven towards the means used by politicians to negotiate their own positive face as well as the means used within communication acts threatening the face of their political competitors.

Specifika českého jazykového obrození

Specific features of the Czech language revival

Ondřej Bláha

Bohemica Olomucensia 2014, 6(3):252-263 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2014.024

The paper describes the main intentions of Czech linguists that resuscitate the standard Czech language at the beginning of the 19th century. The author shows how the derived words (at the expense of compound words) were preferred, just as borrowings from Polish and Russian - the symbolic functions of standard language were important factor here. It has the impact on the problems as well as strengths of the contemporary standard Czech language. It put a brake on the development of the Czech language in any case.
