Bohemica Olomucensia 2023, 15(2):12-25 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2023.017

The paper focuses on the possibilities of using selected methods and procedures of the Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking programme in teaching individuals with a different mother tongue. Most of them develop reading literacy understood as the ability to understand, reflect on and use written text to achieve certain goals, i.e. to develop one's own skills and knowledge and to actively participate in society. The essence of the paper consists of examples of practical use of selected methods of critical thinking in tea- ching Czech as a second/foreign language, which serve to motivate and develop writing and speaking.

Slovesná valence v češtině nerodilých mluvčích

Verb valency in non-native Czech

Andrea Hudousková

Bohemica Olomucensia 2023, 15(2):26-41 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2023.018

The paper presents the results of the analysis of verb valency in non-native Czech on the basis of the learner corpus MERLIN. In order to confirm the hypothesis based on previous studies on valency in non-native Czech, i.e. that non-native speakers overuse prototypical patterns and central meanings of verbs, the use of verbs and their valency frames were examined in 148 texts at CEFR levels A2, B1, and B2. The research based on 3350 occurrences of verbs leads to the conclusion that the number of valency patterns and expressed meanings indeed does not significantly increase with higher level of proficiency.

Michaela Kopečková

Bohemica Olomucensia 2023, 15(2):58-91 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2023.020

Bohemica Olomucensia 2023, 15(2):92-121 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2023.021

The present study focuses on the acoustic analysis of spoken Czech of Francophone speak- ers and focuses on the realization of vowels (which were measured and evaluated using the Praat program). The background material for the analysis were audio-recordings of loud Czech reading by 50 students studying Czech with French as a mother tongue. The analysis shows that the realization of Czech vowels is influenced by negative transfer from the native language, which decreases with higher language level.

Integration of Language Skills in Czech Language Testing

Vladimíra Pechová

Bohemica Olomucensia 2023, 15(2):122-145 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2023.022

The integration of language skills as an integral part of the everyday communication is reflected in modern methods of teaching second language. However, many high-stakes language exams still assess language skills separately. To reflect modern trends, an integrated listening-to-writing task was included in the end-of-course exams of Czech at the Institute of Language and Preparatory Studies, Charles University in Prague. Passing this exam and getting a certificate of language proficiency allow students to apply for Czech public universities and study in Czech. In this paper the content, construct and decision to include integrated task in the exam...

Markéta Schürz Pochylová

Bohemica Olomucensia 2023, 15(2):146-169 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2023.023

In addition to the theoretical study of the language, students of Czech studies in Vienna can also develop their practical knowledge of Czech by communicating with native speak- ers from the Czech minority. Students with different language backgrounds meet in the same class during their studies. We asked ourselves whether previous knowledge of the Slavic language is an advantage or disadvantage. We pointed out the typical manifestations of interference from German to Czech and showed what errors it causes and on which language levels.

Zuzana Maleňáková

Bohemica Olomucensia 2023, 15(2):206-231 | DOI: 10.5507/bo.2023.025

The paper presents the results of the research which explores the diachronic development of possessive adjectives in Old and Middle Czech. The research deals primarily with possessive adjectives formed from feminine nouns (constituent type matčin) and is mainly focused on the morphological aspects. On the basis of the excerpted material, the author observes the cases in which possessive adjectives of the type matčin have been preserved and also pays attention to the competition of the nominal and composite (adjectival) forms in each case. The possessive adjectives are shortly commented at the syntactic level as well.
